Assabet Millpond 1916
The millpond was temporarily drained in 1916 so that Mill No.1 could be built. This winter view shows ice skaters on the frozen pond bottom. A wooden flume was built across the back (south) end of the pond to supply water during the construction.
In this recent photo, the millpond is back to its normal level. Traces of the old flume are still visible in the water. The small house in the old photo is still standing on Front Street, but well hidden in the trees at the right.
